User-centered design for intensive care medicine

User-centered design for intensive care medicine

The mortality rate of patients with multiple organ failure in intensive care units remains alarmingly high. Existing therapies are often associated with considerable personnel and time expenditure and require the use of several medical devices.

With the ADVOS system, ADVITOS has developed the world's first therapy platform that combines individualized support for the liver, lungs, kidneys and acid-base balance in a single device. WILDDESIGN accompanied the development of the new ADVOS BK300 device generation with the aim of creating intuitive and ergonomic operation with a recognizable and consistent design language.

Task

  • Development of an intuitive and ergonomically optimized interaction concept
  • Accessibility and operability of important elements even in confined spaces
  • Simplification of the assembly process
  • Reduction of device complexity
  • Visually user-friendly appearance
  • Strengthen market perception of ADVITOS in product design

Procedure

  • Support/responsibility from conception to series production
  • Holistic analysis of workflows and the context of use
  • Surveys of the user groups
  • Close cooperation with the ADVITOS development team and external development partners
  • Regular ergonomic interaction checks through prototypes and user tests
  • Development of the hardware for the therapy platform

Result

  • Easy to understand and therefore more efficient application of the therapy by staff
  • Working at accessible and ergonomic heights
  • Production-oriented housing design
  • Customized and coordinated hardware and software interaction
  • Overarching design principles to strengthen the brand identity

The challenge

Intensive care units place the highest demands on staff and technology - fast responsiveness, intuitive operation and absolute reliability are essential. With this in mind, the ADVOS BK300 had to be designed to be safe, error-free and intuitive to operate, even in stressful situations. The optimized handling not only increases efficiency in everyday clinical practice, but also strengthens ADVITOS' position as a provider of innovative, compact and integrable medical technology in the field of multi-organ failure.

Analysis of the current situation as a starting point for innovation

At the start of the project, WILDDESIGN analyzed the existing processes and user interactions relating to the ADVOS system - both on the device and via the graphical user interface (GUI). The aim was to understand the system in a clinical context, identify potential and work out the needs of the users in a targeted manner.

In particular, the large number of interactions in a small space and inadequate user guidance proved to be key challenges. Ergonomics and usability were essential - all sides of the device, including the interior, had to be easily accessible. A 1:1 model was used for quick concept validation in a real usage context and enabled a direct assessment of the dimensions, operation and effect of the device.

Optimization of handling down to the last detail

In intensive care medicine, every second counts - so interaction with the device must be fast, intuitive and reliable. The ADVOS BK300 has been ergonomically designed so that all relevant interfaces are easily accessible and clearly structured at an ergonomic height to make life as easy as possible for medical staff.

Iterative development steps and numerous practical tests ensured that both the physical and digital interfaces were optimally coordinated - from the color coding and graphical user guidance to the feel and logic of all control elements. The close alignment between GUI and industrial design ensured that the system was consistently geared towards the real requirements of users - and that subsequent adjustments could be reduced to a minimum.

User-friendly appearance developed to series maturity

In order to improve user acceptance in the long term, ADVITOS attached great importance to a friendly, reduced and clear appearance. The soft design language, the bright housing and the structured areas direct the focus to the relevant interaction areas, making the complexity of the system understandable and calming at first glance.

The hose guide on the front is deliberately highlighted by a light gray and inclined surface to create a user-friendly and inviting effect at the main interaction point. The design thus combines a friendly, professional and trustworthy appearance and clearly emphasizes functionality. The ADVITOS brand identity was deliberately implemented at the bottom of the device with a dark blue base, the turquoise band and the logo above. This ensured strong brand recognition without compromising the upper user guidance.

The housing design was matched to the appropriate manufacturing process at an early stage. In close cooperation with the ADVITOS development team and experienced partners from the WILDDESIGN network, this resulted in a cost-efficient and targeted implementation. From the initial idea to series production, the entire development process was accompanied holistically - with the aim of optimally coordinating design, function and production. This development becomes particularly clear in the before-and-after comparison.

Holistic ADVOS therapy system

With the development of the ADVOS Aqua, the therapy system was expanded to include its own osmosis device for water treatment. This was an important step towards a system-integrated solution that is optimally matched to the functionality and operation of the new generation of ADVOS BK300 devices.

Originally planned as a pure redesign, the project evolved into a comprehensive new development. Optimization potential in handling - for example in water extraction and salt addition - was systematically analysed and ergonomically improved. Aesthetics, operating concept and design were brought to series maturity in close coordination with ADVITOS in just a few months.

The result: a holistic ADVOS therapy system that is not only functionally convincing, but also comprehensively strengthens the ADVITOS brand identity through a consistent design language and user guidance.

Conclusion: measurable added value in all areas

The close coordination between the industrial design of the device and the GUI ensured a harmonious and user-centered overall solution. The close collaboration between ADVITOS and WILDDESIGN resulted in a user-friendly and practical system, the ADVOS BK300. The combination of detailed analysis, iterative development and continuous user involvement led to a solution that meets the high demands of everyday medical practice and effectively supports nursing staff.

Two Red Dot Awards - innovation and user-friendliness in perfect harmony

With the ADVOS BK300, ADVITOS is setting new standards - not only in medical technology, but also in design. In a highly sensitive environment where every second counts, WILDDESIGN's aim was to ensure orientation, trust and safety through the sophisticated design.

The double Red Dot Award recognizes the successful combination of technological excellence, intuitive user guidance and clear design language - a strong sign of the relevance of design in extreme medical situations such as multiple organ failure.

"As a strategic design partner, WILDDESIGN provided us with significant support throughout the development of the ADVOS BK300, and thanks to their experience in the medical field, they were able to analyze the complex requirements of intensive care medicine and our ADVOS therapy system holistically and translate them into realistic solutions. The early 1:1 functional prototype in particular was a key instrument: it enabled realistic tests, facilitated decisions and laid the foundation for intuitive, ergonomic operation. We are delighted with the close collaboration and the result."
