The mobile laboratory for the country vet
In today's intensive livestock farming, the early diagnosis of diseases plays a decisive role for the health and welfare of the animals as well as for the economic stability of the farms. This is where our customer's innovative mobile PCR diagnostic system comes in, which has been specially developed for the harsh requirements of veterinary medicine. Imagine a vet being able to obtain precise diagnostic results directly on site, in the pigsty or on the pasture, within a very short time. On his smartphone. This would make it possible to take immediate and targeted action to prevent disease outbreaks, even entire pandemics, and safeguard the welfare of animals and society.
WILDDESIGN was commissioned to develop the design for this complex system. It consists of a mobile analyzer, the sample cartridge, the smartphone app for operation and evaluation, the cloud platform for evaluating the measurements, a transport bag, various packaging, instructions for use and quick-start guides.

Laboratory technology in backpack format
The first challenge was to make the system as small and space-saving as possible. The compact and portable design was the result of many iterations. The device and its accessories fit into a specially developed transport bag, which brings the expensive technology safely to the place of use. This allows vets to take and analyze samples directly in the barn or in the field. This new type of flexibility leads to faster diagnoses and significantly reduces the time between sample collection and the result on the smartphone.
High-quality design of a high-tech application
The design of the PCR analyzer combines functionality with aesthetics. It conveys technical innovation and reliability, which is crucial for high-tech applications. The materials and surfaces are robust and durable so that they can withstand the harsh conditions in an agricultural environment. At the same time, the LED indicator gives the device an air of professionalism that inspires confidence among users.
Plug-and-play: easy to operate
The device is designed so that it is ready for immediate use without installation. The device only needs to be switched on, everything else happens in the smartphone app. Every step in the analysis process has been optimized to save time and increase accuracy. The intuitive user interface on the smartphone app provides clear instructions for easy handling, so that even users without specialist knowledge can work quickly and efficiently. This saves time and minimizes errors during sample preparation and analysis.
Human-centered developed interfaces and system components
When developing the PCR analyzer system, the focus was on the user. The interfaces and system components were designed to optimally meet the needs of veterinarians. Ergonomic aspects were taken into account to facilitate handling and increase working comfort. This human-centered design helps to increase efficiency and promote user acceptance of the system.
How did the development process go?
On-site context of use analysis
At the start of the project, we carried out a comprehensive analysis of the usage context directly on site. By observing the daily work processes of veterinarians in the pigsty, we gained valuable insights into the specific requirements and challenges.
Concept development
Based on the knowledge gained, we developed various concepts for the PCR analyzer system. These concepts were iteratively refined in order to optimally meet the needs of the users and at the same time ensure technical feasibility.
Design vision with prototypes
The next phase involved the creation of design visions and the development of many generations of prototypes. Simple functional samples, prototypes from the 3D printer through to small batches ready for series production were repeatedly tested in real-life application scenarios to ensure that they met the requirements and maximized user-friendliness.
Design detailing
In the design detailing phase, the prototypes were further refined and worked out in detail. Every aspect of the design, from the choice of materials to the color scheme, was carefully coordinated to achieve optimum functionality and aesthetics.
Design detailing phase
Construction of the housing parts
Parallel to the design detailing, the construction of the housing parts began. Here we worked closely with development partners and parts manufacturers to ensure that the high quality standards were met and the technical components were seamlessly integrated.
UI/UX design process with Scrum
The UI/UX design process played a crucial role in the development of the user interface. By working closely with the developers and applying agile methods such as Scrum and regular user testing, we ensured that the user interface was intuitive and user-friendly. New features were continuously developed and tested in 3-week design sprints to ensure high quality and usability.
Multi-platform apps
Multi-platform apps for Android and iOS as well as a desktop version were developed for device operation, so that operation could be kept extremely simple. These apps enable seamless integration of the PCR analyzer system into the veterinarians' existing workflows.
That was the WILDDESIGN part
"There have been few projects in which we have been able to assume such holistic responsibility for product design. The close cooperation with all development partners was very efficient and had a positive effect on the quality of the results. Due to the high level of complexity and the many experts and cooperation partners involved, we were able to learn a lot and it was also a lot of fun to help turn an unusual idea into a finished product."
