Filax Medical AG
Monitoring systems for transurethral irrigation

Seamless flush monitoring
After endourological procedures, such as prostate surgery, continuous bladder irrigation is used to prevent the formation of blood clots and support the healing process. The filaxONEmonitoring system monitors this process digitally and informs the nursing staff about necessary bag changes and the amount of post-operative bleeding. By displaying the patient's situation centrally in the ward room, the system reduces the need for frequent on-site checks, saving valuable nursing time. This promotes efficiency in day-to-day medical care, enables digital documentation and ensures greater safety in patient care. WILDDESIGN supported Filax Medical AG in designing a device that offers optimal usability for the nursing staff and creates a strong recognition value for Filax Medical.

Our path to optimum hose routing
At the beginning of the project, we set up a low-fidelity setup with which we were able to test the interaction context consisting of the infusion stand, hospital bed, device and disposables. The focus was on installing the device and making the tube insertion process as simple and intuitive as possible for the nursing staff. A key challenge was to place the urine tube in a U-curve so that monitoring could take place correctly. To find the best solution, we developed numerous principles and implemented them in low- and high-fidelity prototypes. We evaluated approaches on how to form the hose into the desired shape with one or more hands - from loops and S-curves to drawer solutions, wraps and rotating elements. After intensive testing and optimization, all this finally led to a user-friendly solution: an insertion and turning mechanism that makes the process much easier.

Synergies in development
We embarked on the project on the basis of the design principles developed by our partner BYTEC Medizintechnik GmbH. BYTEC brought in extensive know-how to develop the TechPack and ensure that the final product was not only technically mature but also suitable for production. Working with BYTEC enabled us to ensure a smooth transition from conceptualization to market launch and ensured that the final product optimally met the functional, ergonomic and aesthetic requirements.

An unmistakable design
A strong recognition value was to be created for the design of the series. We developed our design inspired by the symmetry of the U-curve formed from the tube and the wings of an owl, which can be found in the Filax Medical logo. With curved lines, we took up the shape of the U and placed the central interaction element, the insert handle, in the center. The targeted color separation creates a contrast that not only makes the design visually appealing, but also intuitively understandable. The elegant curves give the product line a unique visual identity.

Interaction of top and bottom unit
filaxONEconsists of two units that monitor and document as one system. While the upper unit measures the outflow of liquids from the infusion bags, the lower unit monitors the condition of the urine flowing out. With our design, we developed a housing that supports and emphasizes the functionalities of both units while using as many common parts as possible. We are delighted with the successful collaboration and are already working on further innovative projects with Filax Medical.

"In future, filaxONE could serve as best practice for the sensible use of the manpower of overworked nursing staff. The clever use of digitalization directly at the patient's bedside can avoid unnecessary journeys and create more time for more important activities. The combination of product-oriented engineering, good usability and a meaningful product language has enabled us to create a meaningful system together."
